The great freedom fighter and social reformer Acharya Vinoba Bhave was born on 11 September 1895 in the village of Gagoda in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Vinoba Bhave’s real name was Vinayak Narahari Bhave. When he met Mahatma Gandhi on 07 June 1976, Gandhiji named him Vinoba. In 1959, he established the Brahma Vidya Mandir in Pavanar, Maharashtra. Vinoba Bhave gave many spiritual and philosophical teachings to the people. That is why he got the title of ”Acharya”. He is also called the ‘National Teacher of India’.

After independence in India, there was a huge gap between the rich and the poor. This led to an increase in the gap between the rich and the poor in society. Keeping this in mind, Acharya Vinoba Bhave started the ‘Land Donation Movement’ to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. Through this land donation movement, landlords with hundreds and thousands of acres voluntarily donated their fields to the poor who did not have even a cent of land. Inspired by this movement, landlords across the country donated 44 lakh acres of their land to the poor. Gandhiji believed that the country would get independence only through non-violence, and in 1940, Vinoba Bhave was the first person chosen by Gandhiji to start Satyagraha. For his services, he was honored with India’s highest award, ‘Bharat Ratna’, in 1983.
