The continents and oceans on Earth are called the first-order landforms. The largest bodies of water are called the oceans. Geologists have divided the water on Earth into 5 oceans: 1) Pacific Ocean 2) Atlantic Ocean 3) Indian Ocean 4) Southern Ocean (Antarctic) 5) Arctic Ocean.
The terms sea and ocean are often used interchangeably. However, strictly speaking, a sea is a body of salt water that is surrounded or at least bordered by land. Oceans are divided into different categories based on continents, island groups, and other criteria.
The science of studying the oceans is called “oceanography”. The word is derived from the Greek. The depth of the oceans is measured by echo sounding or Lucas sounding methods. The depth of the oceans is measured in fathoms, the distance in nautical miles, and the speed in knots.
